October 26 Event Report Photos and Video

We had another great turnout this week.  We had a total of 17 pilots and about 25 spectators.  This week we tried some indoor pylon with helium balloons as the pylons.  We had more crashes than finished rounds!  Some new folks showed up this week and the crowd got to see some new models.  A few returning pilots brought some new creations since our October 5 session.

I think it's safe to say that Mark Kummerow really amazed some folks with his new design called the "Widget".  As you will see from the pictures below, the Hobby Lobby Wingo design as been "borrowed".  However, the Widget only weighs .8 oz empty.  The wingspan is about 20 inches.  Mark will be selling the Widget as an ARF for somewhere around $75 with shipping included.  This is really amazing considering he can only make two fuselages per day.

When I say ARF, I mean it.  The model will come completely built in your choice of numerous colors.  All that is left for the modeler is to install some 6 gram servos, a micro Rx, geared N20 motor, ESC.  The wing is made from a very light blue foam and the wing tips come painted to match the fiberglass fuselage color.  The pushrods and control horns are already installed.  Mark had two flying models on display with different motor systems.  He uses a GWS IPS direct drive motor for outdoor flying.  His indoor version had a "Roadkill" geared N20 system with a Gunther 5 x 5 prop.  Mark was using a 7 cell 120mah nickel metal hydride pack for the batteries.  Another good alternative to save weight would be the new 145 to 500 mah lithium polymer cells.

David Grantham and Trey Hogton from Columbus, GA brought a few of his delta wing models.  David performs demo flights for a Columbus based hockey team during the Columbus Cottonmouth games.

I saw on The EZone that Ray Brooks was bringing an Aircraft Carrier to our session.  I got all excited as I thought he made a model for us to do some carrier events.  However, he showed up with a piece of plywood that his planes mounted to so that he could carry them inside from his car!  Well....maybe we can trick someone into building a real carrier???

Finally a few more Rarebears showed up for some pylon but only two were flight ready.  Mark crashed his right out of the gates and the race was never finished.  Hopefully the Rarebear races will get going soon.  Paul...you need to maiden that little bear and get her race ready with the full dressing of decals.

Rufus Carswell has attended the last two sessions soaking up the info and is about ready to start flying his own little RFFS powered bipe.

Matt Klos entrusted me with the sticks on his GWS Beaver for a Beaver pylon race with Ernie.  So...what did I do??? I crashed it into the net and promptly nosed it into the Astroturf!  Anyone else want me to fly their models?\

Jim Beck made his debut at Atlanta Indoor RC with his new Lite Stick and managed to take it home in one piece.

Jason McClain brought a couple of new designs this week.  Below you will find a picture of his own design "Mini IFO" scratch build.  The covering scheme is timely for Halloween.  He also had a little IPS powered blue foam aileron plane.  I did not get a chance to see it fly but it looks like a winner.

Ernie Schlumberger brought a new model that he scratched from plans.  I'm not sure of the name, but it is a thick airfoil 7 oz. GSW IPS powered fun fly design.  He really did a nice job building this model and keeping it light.  (around 7 oz.)  The wing has over 300 square inches in area.  Materials used to build the ribs are light balsa and blue foam.  About half the ribs are balsa and the other half are foam.  Due to gearbox problems we only got to see a short flight.  However, we are looking forward to seeing this one in the future.

As a final note....

If your model can handle the weight of the new FMA M5 Rx at .3 oz I strongly encourage you to try this new Rx.  It is so much better than the single conversion GWS Rx.  You may spend a lot more on the Rx, but you won't be fixing or junking your crashed models caused by glitching.

I will try to post some new video soon.

Take care,

Jeff
