November 2, 2002 event report

Photos and Video below

This week we had about 15 or so pilots flying at our November 2nd session. We had a few new folks show up with some interesting models.  Thanks again to all that are participating.  I'm really glad to see everyone taking advantage of this great opportunity to fly at such a cool facility.  I hope to be able to post the rest of our winter schedule by the end of next week.  The plan is to book the sessions every three weeks.  The indoor soccer season starts next week and will end around March 1, 2003.  I will be working with the management of the Soccer Center to book November thru March or April.

Thanks again to the folks at the Hobby Stop for donating the Pico Stick for our raffle tonight.  Paul De Waard was the lucky winner...and most deserving after all the rebuilds he made on his Tigermoth tonight.

I would also like to thank the fine folks at Hobby-Lobby for supporting our new indoor ventures.  Mike...when are you coming down for the Rarebear races???  Larry...the sick pass is only good for one weekend.  Your pass is now invalid. :-)

Mark Murdock arrived with a 9 foot blimp that was powered with some sort of electric boat motor.  I did not get a chance to get some details, however, one thing I found interested is that the motor pivots up and down as well as right and left for turning.  He also uses a very large rudder on the back of the pod for steering.

One of my personal highlights of the evening was watching Paul De Waard fly (crash) his Tigermoth.  I lost count after 3 major crashes.  If you look at the picture below, that was one of Paul's typical crashes.  The amazing part is that Paul would sit down at the end of the arena with pieces and a bottle of glue...literally minutes later he as flying (crashing) again.

Jim Beck graced our presence again with some new models including his Hobby Lobby "Direct 280".  I think he likes to call it the purple people eater.  He crashed it a few times and got it stuck in the net.  Absolutely nothing happened to in and it will live to see wide open skies out at the club field.

Andy Willetts flew his new Slowstick for 30 minutes at a time with a nickel metal hydride pack.  He also brought his Piccolo and is still learning to fly it.  Keep at it...a little more practice and you will get it down.

We had a few more Rarebears take to the arena...I think one needs some TLC. My facts may be wrong...heck...I might be making this up but here's my recap....Tommy Vinci was "trimming out" Paul's Rarebare and got some "glitches".  That's his story and he's sticking too it.  The "glitches" required a light rebuild on the model.  Tommy did get one or two sucessfull flights in with Bill Divins Rarebear.

"Jimmyray" came back from Alabama with his sub ounce models and I gracefully crashed his F100 as we tried to get the CG right.  Luckily, Jim fixed jet and we got a successful flight in for the evening.  Thanks to Mark Murdock, he caught the model before I "landed" it into his blimp!

Steve Dukes flew the Mountain Models Duskstick for a while until he mid-aired with someone.  His Switchback made a few laps until he got smart and brought it in for a landing.  He's planning to try the sport wing to get the speed and wing loading down.

Matt Klos put a few flights on his new Widget and managed to take it home about a pound heavier than when it arrived...less wheels!  I had a chance to maiden my Widget this evening.  After a tail heavy first flight, I got the CG correct and putted around the arena and about 1/3rd throttle.  This is a cool little plane for indoor at about 3 oz. all up weight.  The 145 mah Kokams are the ticket to keep it light.

Paul De Waard was the lucky winner of the GWS Pico Stick

Thanks to the Hobby Stop for supporting our event.
