I purchased this sailplane in the hopes of using it in Class A and B events in addition to just having fun. I feel that it is a nice multipurpose design. The airfoil and high aspect ratio allows the Elipsoid to really cover some airspace when hunting for thermals. Another side benefit is that it can handle windy days. I have the rudder mixed in with the ailerons for turning. The landings require using spoilerons; otherwise, I overshoot the landing spot.
Beware that Northeast Sailplane advertises this plane at an all up weight of 60 oz. As you can see from my above equipment selection, there is no way to get this plane in that weight range. Consequently, the wing loading is higher than I hoped for. However, I am very pleased with the performance. Many folks have mentioned how nice looking the plane is and how well it flies.
As you can see, space is a premium in the fuselage. The servos are installed directly underneath where you see my ESC. I covered the servo area with a balsa plate that can be removed with some screws. The 7 and 10 cell packs are placed on a plate located underneath the wing inside the fuse. The battery plate is screwed into the fuse so that it can be removed to get at the RX. The RX and RX battery pack are placed behind the servos and underneath the motor battery.
Whether you are a sailplane competitor or not, I would like to recommend that you take a look at joining the League for Electric Soaring. This is a free club. Basically, participating in this club will challenge you to become a better sailplane pilot. There are a series of achievement levels that consist of many tasks: endurance, precision landings, distance and competition points.
